    Description

VTG Pinback Button - “Launching U.S.S. Chas. S. Sperry 3/13/1944”. USS Charles S. Sperry was named for Charles Stillman Sperry, the commanding officer of the Yorktown. Sperry would later attain the rank of rear admiral. She was launched 13 March 1944 by Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Kearny, New Jersey; sponsored by Miss M. Sperry; commissioned 17 May 1944 and reported to the Pacific Fleet. An Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer, the USS Chas. S. Sperry remained in service with the United States Navy from 1944 to 1973. In 1974, she was sold to Chile, where she served as Ministro Zenteno. She was finally scrapped in 1990. This button commemorates the launching in 1944 and is a great addition to collectors of WWII or naval memorabilia and would be especially meaningful to anyone who served on this ship. Button measures 1.5” in diameter and is pre-owned. Shipped with USPS First Class.
