Not totally sure what came after this, but it wouldn't surprise me if the line this model came from was the last great Sony turntable line. The PS-LX5 adds quartz locking, and I'm not sure what else, but the servo lock on my LX3 works perfectly. Very surprised how little maintenance mine needed when I got it, and I can't see why it'd ever need much more. Seems pretty bulletproof. Sounds great, works perfectly.
These are a lot heavier than they look in pictures. Plinth is iron or something; it's painted metal of some sort (not plastic, as it sometimes looks like in pics), and the scratched areas on mine reveal that the metal is black underneath. The platter is quite heavy too. Still gets up to speed very fast (originally 1/3 turn, and I think mine is still about their judging from the servo lock light). Very solid turntable with a lot of 70s high-end features that had trickled down to the mid-range by the early 80s when this model was produced. Full auto, locked speed, ultra low mass tonearm.
Not even the bulb on mine is burnt out, and I'm pretty sure it's original. The light sensors all still work perfectly, too. Nothing is out of adjustment, and everything's just fine, even on a 35-year-old turntable that's gone through multiple owners.

I have used one of these turntables since it was purchased brand new in 1982. The only thing we have had to do is change styli over the years. The auto record size selection uses a light and photo sensors under the platter to determine the record size. Speed is rock solid thanks to the magnadisc technology used. I have acquired 2 more of these turntables since they are so reliable, and they have been just as good as the first one I have.
