Description
A descendant of a Turkish slave general, Mahmud of Ghazi was the first Islamic ruler to claim the title "sultan," which means "authority." His empire was one of the largest in the medieval world, encompassing vast swaths of present-day Central Asia. Despite his rumored bisexuality, Mahmud was a devout Muslim.He pledged yearly jihad against India, and invaded 17 times, slaughtering thousands of Hindus and Buddhists, destroying temples, and plundering gold and other treasures. He used this enormous wealth to endow his capital city with great centers of learning. He died in 1030 of tuberculosis.
