CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL 7" TALL PERFUME LAMP ROSENTHAL GERMANY - ANTIQUE
This adorable porcelain ceramic, Hard-to-Find, detailed 7” tall Cavalier King Charles Spaniel perfume lamp dates to the 1920s-1930s. In Germany, these types of lamps were called “smoke dispellers” as they were used to cover up the smell of cigarettes and cigars.
This lamp was produced with a hole on the backside used to pour perfume oils into the reservoir well inside the body (see pictures).  As the bulb heated, the perfumed smoke would expel through the 15 smaller vent holes surrounding the larger pour hole.
Originally, this piece would have rested on a brass plate that held the lamp base in place inside the body of the lamp. The plate would have been attached to one of the holes on the side of the lamp.  This plate is long gone.
The original electric cord was removed before I acquired this piece, but a certified electrician installed a new, modern (and safe) cord and lamp base. The electrical cord measures approx. 39”. The cord runs through the last hold on the side of the lamp.  The lamp base is attached to a round plexiglass base.  It securely sits inside the body of the lamp. The original cord would have run through the largest hole on the side (the one with the chip marks around it - see picture). When plugged in, the lightbulb illuminates the whole of the lamp with the glass eyes glowing a bright yellowish orange.
The makers identification information has been incised on the face of the oil reservoir inside the body (see pictures).  It reads “
Modell Rosenthal-Werk Hamburg I, DRPN 393003, Germany.”
This lamp weighs 1.3 lbs. and measures 7” x 4 ½” x 4 5/8”.
This piece is in excellent condition.  With the exception around the chips around the original electrical cord hole, there are no cracks, breaks, crazing, etc.
