a Representative from Michigan; born in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Mich., November 15, 1937; graduated from Battle Creek Central High School, Battle Creek, Mich.; B.A., University of Michigan, 1959; M.D., Wayne State University, Detroit, Mich., 1964; physician; United States Navy, 1965-1967; served in the Central Intelligence Agency, 1968-1970; Battle Creek City Commissioner, 1979-1985; mayor of Battle Creek, Mich., 1985-1987; member of the Michigan state senate, 1987-2002; unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the United States House of Representatives in 1992; elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Ninth Congress (January 3, 2005-January 3, 2007); unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the One Hundred Tenth Congress in 2006.
