The difference between egg washing methods
:
Brushes vs Water Bath
Water Bath (aka Bubbler Method):
This is an immersion type of washing  eggs in a bucket of preheated water that needs to be constantly refreshed and requires an air compressor to bubble up through the eggs which creates a turbulence effect. This method requires adding a surfactant or soap to help remove soils. These set ups are simple, inexpensive, slow and are frowned upon by Health Inspectors due to the fact that they do not meet the standard set by the government for cleanliness. Great for the home hobby group of enthusiasts.
Brush Method
: The full contact brush method of cleaning eggs is the one tried and true method used by serious egg producers world wide. These big machines are able to wash up to 100,000 or more eggs an hour with an entry price level of ,000 for the smaller machines which places them out of reach for the small working family farm. The brushes come into full mechanical contact with the eggs, leaving them fully rinsed, resulting in a much faster and complete process. What puts the EGG-GO egg washers in the same company as these commercial machines is the use of the same type of commercial brush while supplying a continuous flow of clean, temperature regulated water. The difference is the length of the brushes and how many eggs per hour.
What are the choices for the serious small egg farmer:
The Gibson Egg Washer:
As many beginning egg producers have done (like us), we looked at the Gibson washer. At 75.00 plus shipping, it is a replica of a 1950's machine. It measures 24" long and you will not get a look at it from the inside. We bought one anyway over 2 years ago, waited 8 weeks for it, used it a couple times and set it in the corner. The single brush with a hard auger to move the eggs along simply did not clean our cackleberries. The simple equation of how long the eggs need to be in contact with the brush did not add up. The Egg Washer 3000:
Look these machines up on youtube. These are built by a real nice family in Texas as an entry level machine. They start at twice the price of the EGG-GO machine, ,500+ plus some serious freight. They require a dedicated space to operate, need at least two operators and dedicated electrical. In my opinion, this machine only has one brush that stays in full contact with the eggs, the second brush simply moves them along and does little cleaning. Again, egg contact time is my concern. Welcome to our world of washing eggs! As we approached our target of 1000 layers, we were getting pretty beat up hand washing some 800 eggs a day. We are talking some serious hours here. On our rainy days, pastured chickens lay some muddy eggs at times. This could take up to 4 1/2 hours a day. 7 days a week! We were making OK money at a dozen so we didn't complain much but it was hard. Since those days we have been $aving over 50 hours a month in start to finish egg processing. The Gibson washer was not up to the task, not even close. In the design phase of building our EGG-GO machine, the check list included:
Portability:
We needed to be able to set it on top of our sinks or outside on a table. The center located drain port puts the discharge where you want it.
Variable Speed:
Different days meant that at times there is one person available, other days, two.
Self Contained Hot Water:
Flexibility for using it outside when we want, anywhere there is a hose.
Low Power Consumption:
Plugs into any 15 amp outlet. Extension cords, no problem!
Can Handle up to 3000 Birds:
At 3000 birds, you better have some help! The EGG-GO is up for it!
Durability:
The brushes and motors are hard core commercial duty, made to our specs. The two concealed motor direct drive system has no belts or pulleys to deal with.

To build a machine for the public, this is my biggest attention to detail.

Value:
Nobody wants to spend a couple grand on anything. If you are serious about your time, do the math and you will notice how fast the return on your investment will be. Beyond the R.O.I., as a small farmer, we all understand how hard it is to find real help so your time is truly the big factor here. Ask yourself: What would you do with an extra 50+  hours a month(1000 birds). Once the machine has paid for itself, it's gravy from there on!
R.O.I:
If you have 250 birds, this machine may be hard to justify. It's great, fast and makes it easy to clean eggs.
At 500 birds you are looking at an 8 month return on investment.
At 1000 birds you are looking at an 4 month return on investment.
At 2000 birds you are looking at an 2 month return on investment.
At 3000 birds you are looking at an 1 month return on investment.
Beyond 3000 Think about moving towards a big machine.
