    about origin and distribution
among the german hens at the end of the 18th century in Westfalen were some found to have a outstanding laying ability. the locals gave them the name the everyday layer or continues layer. under influence of the niederdeutscher dialect its name turned into Daudtleijer and translated back into high german it turned into Totleger. it developed  from all existing landraces of german chickens in the middle of the 19th century. common Characteristics- rather dark irisis, white or light blue earlobes. Grey or blueish lauffarbe, (legs) as white egg shell point to a heritage of all northwest european breeds. the rosecomb variation of the northwest german sprenkelhuhn can not be exactly dated, but it is certain that the totlegers ancestors existed in the 18ths. The Totleger came about through many years of breeding by the big Poultry farmers in the east westfaelischen regions. Herford and Bielfeld is the center for breeding. Under the more harsh climate of the Ravensberger hillsides it turned into a busy forager and the breed was not rare until late into the 19th century. the importation of foreign breeds at around 1880 made them more scarce. the association created in 1904 maintain the standard of breed but was not able to spread its use. The totleger could not compete with the productivity of these foreign breeds and since about 1900 are more a snowbird amongst breeders and few admireres. the lowest bird count was noted in 1980.  only since 1988 under a new formation of the breeders association with the head of W. Derek is a upward trend in population noted that maintains until today.
