WHY WAS HE CALLED THE ASSASSIN ?
Al-Saffah had ordered the execution of 90 members of the Umayyad family still remaining alive. They managed to evade their executioners and were living in Basra. Al-Saffah claimed the executions were a terrible mistake and that his orders were misunderstood, and invited the 90 Umayyads to a dinner banquet to plead in person for their pardon. When dinner was served and the guests confortably seated Al-Saffah summoned his guards who surrounded the guests and flogged everyone to death. The agonizing bodies were rolled in carpets, and the soldiers were invited to sit on them and gorge themselves on the uneaten food. Only one Umayyad was absent from this banquet, Abdel-Rahman, who appeared a few years later in Spain (already occupied by the Moors and Arabs) and founded the Umayyad dynasty there. Also to make sure the descendants of Abu-Sufyan and Mu'awiya disappeared from the face of earth, he opened the tomb of EVERY Umayyad caliph in Damascus, had the bones burned and the ashes scattered in the wind. One whose body had not yet reached the state of decomposition (probably Ibrahim or Marwan II) was crucified !!
