Description
Pinback button, a souvenir of the debate between President Jimmy Carter and Republican Party challenger Ronald Reagan, Cleveland, Ohio, 1980.With their candidate lagging in the polls, Democrats pinned their hopes on a televised debate, to be aired on the eve of the election. It was expected that the cerebral president could easily best his charming but perfunctory opponent in a head-to-head contest of wits. While he clearly had a better grasp of many issues, Reagan's superior showmanship overcame Carter's dry delivery, and the encounter did nothing to reverse the trend.
