At
“We Talk to Our Eggs”
weare blessed with Beautiful Pure Bred - Welsh Harlequin Ducks. We are a smallBoutique Breeder of a select few rare breeds of poultry. The Harlequin is onthe Endangered Species “watch” list only recently coming back from the criticallist.
All of our Poultry is bred to the APA standard of Perfection, or SOP
. A couple of our rare/newbreeds are not yet recognized by APA, but we are actively working with otherbreeders to make this happen. By carefully breeding selection and responsibleculling we are producing show quality birds that maintain the breed’stemperament and expected production levels.
Welsh Harlequin Ducks
are dual purpose birds – laying 240-330“Extra-Large” eggs starting at 5-7 months & producing a lean meat. They arean estimated 4.5 to 6 lbs. at maturity & considered a “light-breed” (not nearly as large as Peking’s) making them ideal for small farms or urbanresidences that want to raise their own food sources.
Our Breeding Flock is fed ahigh-quality non-medicated diet consisting of both organic and non-organic foods- including an Organic balanced feed ration & supplemented with freshvegetables, fermented & sprouted grains.
*HOWEVER
- Medicated foods should be considered as ducklings & chicks are they are highly susceptibleto infectious diseases like coccidiosis, which untreated can kill them in aslittle as 24 hours. We do start our own ducklings on medicated feed for theirsafety until 6 weeks old.
We collect eggs three times a day, candle, and sort them and then package themall by hand;
we don’t wash hatching eggs – Ever!
Eggs have a protectivecoating called a bloom that works to keep out bacteria. Washing them removesthat. Once your eggs have arrived, carefully unpack them and
CANDLEeach one
. If any of the eggs have hairline cracks, you can trymelting candle wax and dripping it on to the crack to seal it or scotch tapeworks really well to and is a lot easier to do. This doesn’t always work, butwe have saved many this way.
Allow the shipped eggs to situpright in an egg carton (large end up) for 24 hours at roomtemperature. We recommend incubating in a carton, fat end up – for atleast the first 7 days if possible. * Why you ask – there is almost ALWAYS someair sac damage done in shipping – saddled, detached, bubbly – setting them upright in a carton allows the embryo to develop without the disruption ofturning – THEY WILL NOT STICK TO THE SHELL – this is a myth.
Should any egg develop a blood ring, begin to smell, or seep fluids
remove it from the incubator immediately.
We have personally begun experimenting with a “no turn” method on all our“shipped in” eggs and are seeing fabulous results so far. “YES” you can hatcheggs SAFELY without turning them. There are protocols to do this successfully,so
do your research
!
(There is actually strong evidence & studies that indicate- turning any egg is damaging to the embryo)
