    Grateful Akers Farm & Apiary
is excited to offer hatching eggs from our
    flock of pure-bred
    Narragansett turkeys.
They are by far our favorite breed of turkey:
    big, beautiful, friendly, and easy-keepers!
In our opinion you simply won't find a better turkey!
    Narragansetts are a
heritage breed listed on the Livestock Conservancy's watch list, who trace their roots all the way back to the pilgrims.
Their iconic plumage can be seen in countless illustrations of early American history, and are as stunning today as ever. Though previously wide-spread across our continent, large-scale poultry farming has led to their decline as they are better suited for small homesteads than
    commercial
    operations.
We've been breeding Narragansetts for 3 years now, and have incorporated new bloodlines each year to keep our flock healthy. We currently have 5 hens and 2 toms, so are only getting 4-5 eggs per day, but with very high fertilization rates. All of our birds are free-ranged 24 hours per day (made possible by 4 of the best Livestock Guardian Dogs on the planet), with ample access to pasture, insects, and free-choice locally-sourced turkey feed.
Being a heritage breed, these turkeys spend most of their time foraging in the pasture and therefore are lite on the feed bill. Because of their heritage genetics, they are also more resistant to diseases and parasites relative to conventional breeds of turkey. And though not all of them are super friendly right off the bat, with a little time we have found most Narragansett turkeys to be some of the friendliest birds we've had the pleasure of working with.
Most eggs we ship are less than 72hrs old when we hand them over to USPS, and we never ship eggs that we wouldn't feel confident putting in our own incubator. Eggs are usually packaged immediately after your purchase, and will be shipped as soon as possible following payment (
typically within 36hrs, unless it's the weekend and we have to wait until Monday for USPS to open...in which case we wait to collect & package your eggs until the day prior to USPS reopening
). Therefore it's important you pay as soon as possible, so that your packaged eggs don't sit around any longer than necessary before shipping (
the sooner they get to you, the better the chance they have at hatching
). If for some reason your order will take longer to fill, we will reach out and let you know as soon as possible.
Your eggs will be shipped inside of proprietary foam shipping blocks, snugly tucked inside of custom-cut egg compartments surrounded by air cushions. We've had very good results with this shipping method, and only had 1 customer report a broken egg in 2020 (out of over 1000 eggs shipped). Due to this low rate of egg damage, we do not send extra eggs with our orders. Local pickup is available (and preferred) if you are close to Tuscaloosa or Birmingham AL. Last year we averaged about a 95% hatch rate with our eggs on our farm, but keep in mind that shipping will likely decrease your hatch rate (and possibly drastically if mishandled during shipment).
WE REALLY REALLY WANT THESE EGGS TO HATCH FOR YOU!
We never ship eggs that we wouldn't put in our own incubator, and always do our best to make sure your eggs get to you intact and in a timely manner so that you have the best shot at a good hatch rate.
BUT PLEASE...refrain from rating us according to your hatch rate
, as there are too many factors out of our control that contribute to poor hatching following shipment (temperature, moisture, shaking, falling, bumping, dropping, rolling, being crushed, shipping delays, etc.). Instead, please rate us according to what we CAN control: secure packaging, communication, & speed of getting your package in the mail once payment received.
PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE RISK OF ABYSMAL HATCH RATES
    when incubating shipped eggs.
*Do not bid on this auction if you are unwilling to accept the risk of a poor hatch rate secondary to shipping stress
. We do not offer refunds for poor hatch rates. Although we often get customer feedback reporting 80-100% hatch rates, unfortunately sometimes eggs are treated poorly en route to their destination leading to disappointing hatches. This is beyond our control and therefore we do not offer any sort of guarantee on how many of your eggs will hatch. Simply put, eggs were not designed to withstand the stress of shipping....we do our best to protect them on their way to you, but sometimes it is not enough. By placing a bid on this auction, you are accepting the risk of a 0% hatch rate.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us via eBay. Happy hatching, and we hope you love your Narragansett Turkeys as much as we love ours!
